Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

Six-mark questions on Edexcel Foundation Biology papers use levels-of-response marking, which means the examiner is judging the overall quality of your answer rather than ticking off individual points.

**What levels-of-response means:**

The examiner places your answer into one of three levels. Level 3 (the top band, 5–6 marks) goes to answers that are detailed, well-organised, and use the correct scientific terminology throughout. Level 2 (3–4 marks) covers answers that have some good points but miss detail or clarity. Level 1 (1–2 marks) is for answers that show basic understanding but lack depth or structure.

**How to target Level 3:**

First, read the question carefully and identify what biology it's asking for. Six-markers often ask you to explain a process, compare two things, or evaluate a statement.

Question 2

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

A mark scheme organises answers into "levels", each level describes what a student needs to do to earn a certain range of marks. For example, a 6-mark question might be divided into three levels: level 1 (1–2 marks), level 2 (3–4 marks), and level 3 (5–6 marks). The higher the level, the more detailed, accurate, and well-explained your answer needs to be.

**What makes a higher-level answer?**

Level 1 answers typically identify basic points or list facts without linking them. Level 2 answers develop those points with some explanation or link ideas together. Level 3 answers give a detailed, well-structured response that clearly explains the science, uses correct terminology, and often compares or evaluates ideas.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is designed to slot into your revision routine whenever you're ready to test yourself, no need to wait until you've covered everything.

**Past papers** are full, official 1h 10m papers released by Edexcel after each exam series. They're brilliant for timed run-throughs once you've revised most of the content, but they can feel overwhelming early on (and you'll run out of them quickly if you use one every week).

**Our exam practice** breaks the same question types down by topic and difficulty, so you can practise Paper 1 or Paper 2 content as you go. Each question is tagged to a specific topic (like Topic 3: Genetics, or Topic 6: Plant structures and their functions), so you can focus on what you've just revised without waiting to finish the whole syllabus. You'll also see immediate feedback and worked solutions, which makes it easier to learn from mistakes in the moment.

We'd suggest using our exam practice throughout your revision to build confidence topic-by-topic, then switching to full past papers under timed conditions closer to the exam.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

The simple formula is **just over 1 minute per mark**, both Biology papers are 70 minutes for 60 marks, so that works out at about 1 minute 10 seconds per mark.

In practice, we'd suggest starting with a quick skim of the whole paper to spot the longer questions (usually at the end). A 1-mark question asking you to tick a box will take 10 seconds; a 6-mark question asking you to describe and explain a process might need 7 or 8 minutes. The "minute per mark" rule gives you a rough guide, but adapt it as you work through.

**Don't get stuck.** If a question is eating time and you're not making progress, move on and come back to it at the end. You'll pick up more marks answering three 2-mark questions than wrestling with one tricky 6-marker for 15 minutes.

A good habit is to glance at the clock every 10 questions or so to check you're on track.
