Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

The 6-mark questions in Edexcel GCSE Biology Foundation use levels-of-response marking, which means the examiner puts your whole answer into a "level" based on how well you've covered the topic. Here's how to max out those marks.

**Understand the three levels:**

Edexcel uses a three-level mark scheme for extended-response questions. Level 3 (the top level, worth 5–6 marks) requires a detailed, logical answer that covers all the key points the question asks for. Level 2 (3–4 marks) is for answers that cover some points but miss detail or structure. Level 1 (1–2 marks) means you've touched on the topic but without enough depth or accuracy.

**Answer the whole question, not just part of it:**

Read the question carefully and note if it asks for multiple things (e.g. "Describe the process AND explain why it's important").

Question 2

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

In Edexcel Biology, some longer-answer questions are marked using a **levels-based mark scheme**. Instead of ticking off individual points, the examiner reads your whole answer and decides which level it fits into.

**How levels work:**

Each level describes the quality of the answer. Higher levels need more complete explanations, better-linked ideas, and clearer scientific reasoning. Lower levels might have gaps, or only partly answer the question.

**What the examiner looks for:**

They're checking whether you've covered the science the question asks for, how well you've explained it, and whether your answer is logically structured. A level 3 answer (the top level in most Edexcel levelled questions) will cover all the key points, link ideas together clearly, and use the right scientific terminology.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice questions are written by our team to target specific topics and question types, so you can build up your skills step by step. They're organised by topic and come with instant feedback, which means you can see what you got wrong and why, then have another go straight away.

Past papers are the real exam papers set by Pearson Edexcel in previous years. They're brilliant for getting a feel for the actual exam format and timing, but they don't give you instant feedback, and the questions jump around between topics (just like the real thing). That makes them harder to use when you're still learning the content.

**We'd suggest this order:** start with our notes and flashcards to get the content down, then use our exam practice to build confidence on each topic. Once you're comfortable with most of the spec, move on to past papers under timed conditions.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

Both your papers have the same structure: 1 hour 45 minutes for 100 marks. That works out to roughly **1 mark per minute**, so you can use the marks as a guide for how long to spend on each question.

A 1-mark question should take about a minute, a 4-marker about four minutes, and so on. If a question is worth 6 marks, aim to spend around six minutes writing your answer. This keeps you on track and stops you spending too long on any single part.

**Why the marks matter:**

Longer questions don't just want more facts, they're testing whether you can develop an explanation, link ideas together, or analyse data. A 6-mark question often asks you to explain a process step-by-step or evaluate different sides of an argument.
