How do I know if I've properly learned a topic in Biology?

You know you've properly learned a topic when you can retrieve the information from memory without looking at your notes. The best test is to close your book and try explaining the topic out loud, or writing down everything you remember on a blank page (this is sometimes called the blurt technique). If you can do that, the knowledge has stuck.

If you're consistently getting 80% or more on a topic quiz, that's a good sign you've learned the content. Each time you retrieve the answer from memory, you're strengthening the pathway, even if you get it wrong the first time, that struggle helps you remember it later.

**Fitting it into your schedule:**

You don't need hours at a time. Even 15–20 minutes of focused quizzing each day will make a real difference. Our quizzes are organised by topic, so you can target exactly what you've just revised or mix in older topics to keep them fresh.

We'd suggest doing a quiz **before** you read the notes.

It sounds counterintuitive, but research on pre-testing shows that attempting questions before you've studied the content primes your brain to notice the answers when you encounter them later. You'll spot the gaps in your knowledge immediately, which makes reading the notes much more focused.

Here's how we'd use it: open our quiz for the topic you're about to revise, answer as many questions as you can (guessing is fine), then immediately read through our notes with those gaps fresh in your mind. The concepts you struggled with in the quiz will stick much better when you meet them in the notes.

That said, if you've already read the notes, a quiz afterwards is still hugely valuable. It's active recall in action, which is one of the most effective revision techniques.
