Question 1

When should I start doing AQA GCSE Chemistry past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early gives you a real advantage, and we'd suggest working through topic-by-topic questions as you finish each section of the course. Our by-topic view makes this straightforward: once you've covered Topic 8 (Atomic structure and the periodic table) in class, for example, you can use our exam practice to see exactly how AQA asks about it in the papers.

We'd then suggest holding back two or three full papers for the final weeks before your exams, ideally after your mocks, so you can experience what a full 1 hour 15 minute paper feels like under real pressure. Mocks are a useful checkpoint too: if any topics caught you out, our notes and exam practice are a great way to go back over those areas before returning to full papers. Spreading the work across the whole year builds confidence steadily, rather than facing everything as a last-minute rush.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no fixed number that suits every student, but working through past papers consistently in the weeks before your exams is among the most valuable revision you can do for AQA GCSE Chemistry Higher. We'd suggest starting with our by-topic exam practice to build confidence across the Paper 1 and Paper 2 content first, then moving on to full papers once the material feels solid. Spacing your papers out over several weeks rather than running through them all at once helps the knowledge stick more reliably, which is the principle behind spaced retrieval. If you're targeting grades 8 or 9, paying close attention to where you drop marks on AO2 (applying knowledge) and AO3 (analysing experimental data) questions will sharpen your performance the most, so reviewing mark schemes carefully after each paper is just as important as doing the papers themselves.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Timed practice is a really worthwhile part of your Chemistry revision, and we'd suggest building it in as you get closer to the May/June exams.

We'd suggest starting with our exam practice by topic first so you're working from a solid content base before attempting a full paper under the clock. When you do go timed, bear in mind that each Chemistry paper is 1 hour 15 minutes for 70 marks, which gives you roughly a minute per mark as a useful pacing guide. Research on pre-testing shows that attempting questions before you feel fully confident can help the content stick, so there is no need to wait until everything feels perfect. Reviewing your answers against the mark scheme afterwards is where a lot of the learning happens, and our by-topic view can help you identify exactly which areas to revisit.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is more useful than it might feel right now. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to pinpoint exactly where marks slipped away, because that tells you far more than the number alone.

In AQA Chemistry Higher, around 40% of marks test knowledge and understanding (AO1) and another 40% test applying that knowledge in new contexts (AO2), so it's worth checking whether the gaps are in recalling content (our notes and flashcards can help there) or in using ideas in unfamiliar situations (our exam practice is great for that). Once you've identified the weaker topics, we'd suggest revisiting them using spaced retrieval, returning to each area across a few short sessions before attempting another paper. That steady, spread-out approach tends to make the knowledge stick far better than re-reading once and moving on.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Self-marking is one of the most valuable study habits you can build, and the quality of it comes down to honest self-assessment rather than wishful thinking. We'd suggest downloading the mark scheme from AQA's website (aqa.org.uk/8464) alongside the paper, and marking each question as you go rather than waiting until the end.

For short-answer questions, the mark scheme lists acceptable responses, so credit yourself if your phrasing carries the same scientific meaning, but be strict rather than lenient. For open-response questions (which appear in both Chemistry papers), check whether the mark scheme uses a point-by-point list or a levels-of-response grid, and match your answer against the descriptors honestly. Reading the examiners' report alongside the mark scheme is also worthwhile, as AQA uses it to highlight the most common mistakes students make.

Our exam practice on Cognito tags each question by assessment objective (AO1 for knowledge and understanding, AO2 for application, AO3 for experimental analysis), so once you've marked a paper you can see exactly which type of question is costing you marks and target your revision there.

Question 6

How does Cognito group AQA past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view takes every AQA past-paper question and tags it to one of the ten Chemistry topics in the spec (Topics 8–17, running from Atomic structure and the periodic table through to Using resources), so you can work through questions on exactly the area you need rather than working through a full paper each time.

We'd suggest using it at three natural moments in your revision:

- Just before an end-of-unit test, to check you can handle exam-style questions on that specific topic.
- When mock results flag a weak area, so you can focus on targeted questions for that topic without redoing an entire paper.
- During topic-by-topic revision in the run-up to the exam, working through Topics 8–12 ahead of Paper 1 and Topics 13–17 ahead of Paper 2.

Returning to a topic's questions across multiple sessions is also a practical way to build spaced retrieval into your routine.
