Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chemistry?

Accepted Answer

6-mark questions in Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chemistry are marked using levels-of-response, which means the examiner judges the overall quality of your answer against descriptors for each level rather than simply counting individual points.

To reach the top level, your answer needs accurate scientific vocabulary, clear logical structure, and solid coverage of the chemistry the question is asking about, with ideas linked together rather than just listed one after another. We'd suggest spending a minute planning which key points to include before you write, so your response reads as a coherent explanation from start to finish rather than jumping between ideas.

Our exam practice includes extended open-response questions with mark schemes, so you can compare your own answers against what a top-level response looks like and use the blurt technique to build up your answers under realistic conditions.

Question 2

What do the levels in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chemistry mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Levels-of-response marking applies to the extended open-response questions in your Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chemistry papers. Rather than awarding one mark per correct fact, the examiner reads your whole answer and places it into a level based on the overall quality of your scientific reasoning, the accuracy of your content, and how well your points are connected.

A higher level reflects a more complete, logically structured response that uses precise scientific language throughout, rather than a loosely connected list of facts. What moves an answer up the levels is building a coherent explanation rather than simply listing as many points as possible. Our exam practice includes extended open-response questions with worked examples, so you can see what a top-level answer looks like in Chemistry and build that technique from there.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is built around individual topics, so you can focus on areas like Chemical changes or Rates of reaction and energy changes in isolation and use active recall to check what has stuck. Past papers for 1CH0 mix questions from all nine topics across both papers, which is great for building stamina and timing towards the end of revision, but less useful for identifying and fixing specific gaps earlier on. We'd suggest working through our exam practice topic by topic first, then bringing in past papers once you feel confident across the spec. That way, each past paper attempt gives you much more meaningful feedback rather than just highlighting that revision still needs doing.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

Each Foundation paper gives you 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes) to answer 100 marks' worth of questions, which works out to just over one minute per mark. A really useful habit is to glance at the mark allocation printed next to each question part and use that as your rough time guide: a 1-mark question deserves about a minute, while a 6-mark extended response deserves around six minutes.

Because each paper has ten questions, you won't spend equal time on all of them. We'd suggest working through the paper in order, keeping an eye on the clock, and moving on if you get stuck rather than losing several minutes on a single question. Our exam practice includes timed questions so you can get a feel for this pacing before the real thing.
