Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting on topic-by-topic past paper questions early, as soon as you've covered a section in class, is one of the best forms of active recall and helps you spot gaps before they build up. Our by-topic view makes this straightforward, so you can work through questions on rates of reaction or organic chemistry right after finishing that unit.

We'd suggest saving full papers for the final few weeks, ideally timed around your mocks. Paper 1 and Paper 2 together come to 3 hours 15 minutes of assessment, so completing 2-3 full papers in the run-up to exams gives you a genuine feel for the timing and the range of question styles: multiple-choice, short answer, calculations and extended open response. Our exam practice section has everything you need when you're ready.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the best ways to prepare for 4CH1, and we'd suggest doing as many complete sets as you can fit into your revision schedule. Each full sitting covers both Paper 1 (2 hours, 110 marks) and Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks), so you get a real feel for the workload and the range of question styles across both exams.

We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice to build confidence on individual areas first, then layering in full past papers once the content feels solid. Spacing your paper attempts out across several weeks rather than doing them all at once takes advantage of spaced retrieval, which research consistently shows helps knowledge stick far better than last-minute cramming.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Timing yourself on past papers is genuinely worth doing, but the point in your revision when you start matters just as much. We'd suggest getting confident with the content first, using our notes and quizzes to consolidate each topic, before moving to full timed attempts.

When you do work through a paper against the clock, it helps to know that Paper 1 runs for 2 hours (110 marks) and Paper 2 for 1 hour 15 minutes (70 marks), so you can pace yourself accurately across both. Our exam practice section lets you work through past paper questions by topic, which is a useful way to build up speed before committing to a full paper. Pre-testing, where you attempt questions before you feel fully ready, is particularly effective for surfacing the gaps you didn't know you had.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a practice paper is more useful than it might feel right now, because it shows you exactly where to focus before the real thing. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question and noting which types of marks you dropped: knowledge and recall (AO1), applying your understanding to unfamiliar contexts (AO2), or analysing experimental data (AO3).

Once you can see a pattern, our notes are great for filling content gaps, and our exam practice lets you work through more questions on those specific areas. Spaced retrieval, where you return to weak topics a few days later rather than cramming them all at once, helps the content stick far more reliably than re-reading alone.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Pearson Edexcel publish mark schemes for 4CH1 free on their qualifications website (qualifications.pearson.com), alongside past papers and sample assessment materials, so that's the first place to look. Before you start marking, it's worth familiarising yourself with the command word taxonomy in the spec: Pearson defines each instruction word precisely, so "describe", "explain" and "evaluate" all require different types of response, and knowing the distinction helps you assess your own answers honestly rather than just guessing whether you got it right. For extended open-response questions, mark schemes list a range of acceptable points, so read through the full accepted answer list before deciding how many marks to award yourself. Our exam practice on Cognito is designed to show you what mark-worthy responses look like for each command word, which pairs well with working through official mark schemes and helps you spot any gaps in your answers.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view maps every Pearson Edexcel past-paper question onto the four content areas from the 4CH1 specification: Principles of chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry, and Organic chemistry, meaning you can work through targeted practice on whichever topic you're focusing on rather than searching through full papers to find the relevant questions.

We'd suggest three particularly useful moments for it: just before an end-of-unit test, so you can work through all the past questions on that topic while the content is fresh; when mock results flag a weaker area and you want concentrated practice on it specifically; and during the final topic-by-topic push before your exams, where revisiting each topic's questions in sequence helps the content stick.
